Interpretations of Light

An intuitive draping project

Our daily visual experience in the city is one that we take for granted. In this towering landscape of glass and steel, a single light source travels (in a dance) infinitely by reflecting itself from surface to surface.

‘Interpretations of Light’ applies this behavior of light to a process of creating with fabric. starting from a principally simple origin, and draping impromptu. This method was developed in appreciation of the ephemerality and the spontaneous creation taking place around us constantly.

both pieces began as 2 rectangular sheets of silk with the same dimensions, given form by hand-sewing against the dress form. in this process, the final silhouette was unknown to me and came by tuning into the behavior of the fabric. This makes the collection circular and virtually zero waste. The only fabric leftovers came while subtracting armholes from the blue vest.

The same garment can’t be made twice by this process, but as explored between these layered pieces, the possibilities of the drape are endless despite their shared original state.

In appreciation for the dupioni silk weave’s original qualities, the fabric selvage was preserved and is showcased at the collars.

The wild silk edges were finished with pinking shears to allow the filaments to fray gradually and develop a glowing fuzz over time. The modular wire tendril was the edge of an old sari.
